When lava blankets an area, occasionally a section is spared, and the remaining island of green called a kipuka. In Kalapana, a few houses like this one were untouched, but are know surrounded on all sides by a barren lava, with no connection to water or power and no insurnace claim. I think this is the house circled in the pictures below...
